Shilpa Shetty Brings Miss Bollywood to Stage???

Date: 27 June 2007

Shilpa Shetty may soon be strutting her Bollywood stuff off the screen and onto the stage. A Mumbai newspaper has reported that the Celebrity Big Brother winner, and racial abuse victim, is preparing to star in a new musical called Miss Bollywood, which is rehearsing now in India and the UK, ahead of a London premiere, and planned US transfer, later this year. Shetty told the newspaper: “The musical will be on the lines of Bombay Dreams. And though it's crafted as a take on a day in the life of a Bollywood actress, the play is designed to cater to Western sensibilities.” She hopes that the show will alleviate any racial tensions. “I want foreigners to get familiar with the Indian culture,” she said. “Racism breeds out of ignorance. This is an attempt to educate people of the arts about our existence.” At the height of her new-found fame in the UK earlier this year, Shetty was tipped to take over as Roxie Hart in Chicago (See The Goss, 23 Feb 2007), but expressed concerns over her musical stage skills. While she dances in her films, she merely lip-synchs the lyrics to the songs. She’s reportedly been taking lessons to improve her singing. The team behind Miss Bollywood includes producer Farhat Hussein, choreographer Ganesh Hedge and costume designer Neeta Lulla.
