Brit Shows Suffer from the ‘Curse of the Tonys’???
Date: 13 June 2007
David Grindley’s Broadway staging of RC Sheriff’s World War I drama
Journey’s End collected this year’s Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play just hours after its last performance at New York’s Belasco Theater (See
News, 11 Jun 2007). Clearly, the award came too late to save the play. Meanwhile, just hours after claiming its trophy, the winner of Best Revival of a Musical, fellow Briton
John Doyle’s revival of
Company, also posted closing notices – too late again. The Sondheim piece will close on 1 July 2007, the same day as American August Wilson’s play
Radio Golf, nominated for four Tonys (See
News, 15 May 2007). Another multiple Tony nominee, the National Theatre transfer of
Coram Boy, already shut prematurely, and post nominations announcement, on 27 May 2007. Is it a curse? Or rather just simply a no-gain situation? According to
Variety, reporting on
Company’s closure announcement, when it comes to New York’s premier theatre awards, “it’s generally agreed that only the trophy for new tuner (which went to
Spring Awakening) has real power to boost box office.”
