The Pirate Queen on Rampage in Europe???Date: 13 June 2007 The Pirate Queen, the latest from the legendary Les Miserables writing team of Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schonberg, shutters in New York this weekend (16 June 2007) after a run of just two months. The new musical was previously tipped for the West End (See The Goss, 6 Jul 2005), but given its brief Broadway life, that now seems unlikely. Nevertheless, producers are promising that “plans for a European English-language production are underway and will be announced in the near future". Given who the producers are – Irish John McColgan (Riverdance) and Moya Doherty – and the nature of the piece - true story of legendary Irish chieftain Grace O’Malley – surely a return to Dublin would be a good bet? If that’s still too far to travel, you’ll have to make do with the Broadway cast recording, which is released next month. Set in 16th-century Ireland and England, The Pirate Queen’s score combines pop, rock, musical theatre and traditional Irish music.
