How Long Before Spring Awakens in West End???
Date: 12 June 2007
Weeks before the 61st annual Tony Awards ceremony, Broadway musical
Grey Gardens declared its West End transfer (See
The Goss, 17 May 2007). Given that its competitor
Spring Awakening took home eight trophies to
Grey Gardens’ three on Sunday night – making it the year’s biggest winner (See
News, 11 Jun 2007) – it’s not surprising that producers of the former are already planning their own transatlantic travel. Playbill.com reports that said producers, with trophies in hand on the night, revealed that there will indeed be a production “in England” as well as “in Germany, Austria, France, Spain, Japan, Korea, Israel, Australia. We're getting inquiries from all over the world." <[? Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater's alt-rock musical is based on the
Frank Wedekind play about sexual discovery amongst a group of young people. Its eight wins included Best Musical, Best Original Score, Best Book and Best Direction of a Musical (Michael Mayer). Whatsonstage.com chief critic and blogger Michael Coveney caught a performance of
Spring Awakening on a recent New York trip. Have a read through
Michael's blog to get his verdict on the show and reaction to its Tony success.
