Almodovar’s Musical Breakdown, Manville for Mother???
Date: 29 May 2007

An official announcement about Samuel Adamson’s world premiere stage adaptation of Pedro Almodóvar’s Oscar-winning 1999 film All About My Mother, expected to open at the Old Vic (See The Goss, 11 May 2006), is expected any day now – and there’s still more Almodóvar in the theatrical pipeline. According to the Daily Mail, the Spanish director’s 1988 film Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown is also being turned into a musical, which will open first on Broadway before transferring to the West End. The story revolves around a professional movie dubber who discovers unsavoury secrets about her married lover after he abruptly abandons her. Meanwhile, back at the Old Vic, the newspaper says, Lesley Manville (most recently seen on stage in the NT’s productions of The Pillars of the Community and The Alchemist) is in talks to star in All About My Mother, playing Manuela, a mourning mother who travels to Barcelona in search of her late son’s transsexual father. If demand at the Old Vic is as high as anticipated, the production may move on to another West End receiving house.
