Grey Gardens Blooms in London with Ebersole??? Date: 17 May 2007
Producers of Broadway’s ten-time Tony-nominated musical Grey Gardens have announced their intention to bring the show to London next year with its original star Christine Ebersole reprising her acclaimed performance. London producing partners, dates, further casting and – often a stumbling block for transfers – a venue, have yet to be confirmed. Grey Gardens, which opened at Broadway’s Walter Kerr Theater last November, tells the story of the mother-daughter story of socialites Edith and Edie Beale, the outrageous aunt and cousin of Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy. Ebersole has been nominated for Best Leading Actress in a Musical for her performance as both mother (in the 1940s) and daughter (in the 1970s). If she wins on 10 June, it’ll be her second Tony trophy: she won the same prize for 42nd Street in 2001. Amongst Grey Gardens other Tony nods, announced on Tuesday (See News, 15 May 2007), are Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score and Best Direction of a Musical. The show has music by Scott Frankel, lyrics my Michael Korie and a book by Doug Wright. It’s directed by Michael Greif.
