Actresses Queue up for Almodovar’s Mother at Old Vic???Date: 11 May 2007The latest word on the world premiere stage adaptation of Pedro Almodóvar’s Oscar-winning 1999 film All About My Mother is that it will open at the Old Vic this autumn, following the run of the Rosamund Pike-headed revival of Victorian thriller Gaslight (See News, 4 Apr 2007). When single mother Manuela’s 17-year-old son is killed, she heads to Barcelona in search of his father, a transvestite who never knew he had a child. Manuela also meets the famous actress her son admired, her lover and a young pregnant nun. The stage play is being adapted by UK playwright Samuel Adamson (whose recent plays include Southwark Fair and an adaptation of Ibsen’s Pillars of the Community, both at the National) and will feature Spanish composer Alberto Iglesias’ music for the film. The premiere is also likely to feature some big names in the cast, which, according to the show website, features “some of the strongest roles for female actors in contemporary theatre”. The film starred Penelope Cruz and Spanish-speaking actresses Cecilia Roth and Marisa Paredes. All About My Mother and other productions in artistic director Kevin Spacey’s new season at the Old Vic are expected to be announced imminently. In the meantime, John Osborne’s The Entertainer, starring Robert Lindsay, finishes its extended run on 19 May, ahead of Gaslight, running from 14 June (previews from 7 June) to 18 August 2007.
