Tricycle Nabs UK Premiere of Pulitzer Prize Doubt???

Doubt - John Patrick Shanley’s Pulitzer Prize-winning tale of mystery and morals first staged Off-Broadway in 2004 – looks set to hit London later this year. However, rather than an immediate West End transfer as might be expected, it’s being lined up for a UK premiere at north London’s Tricycle Theatre. According to the
Daily Mail, the play about a nun who suspects a priest of molesting a young black student in a 1964 Bronx school will be directed by either Tricycle artistic director
Nicolas Kent (whose verbatim trial of Tony Blair
Called to Account is the theatre’s current sell-out) or
Shakespeare in Love film director
John Madden, whose last UK stage production was another American import, David Auburn’s
Proof, which starred
Gwyneth Paltrow at the Donmar Warehouse five years ago (See
News, 4 Feb 2002). Shanley, who himself studied at an Irish Christian Brothers’ school in the Bronx, is best known for writing the film
Moonstruck, which starred Cher and Nicholas Cage and won Shanley a Writers Guild of America award for best screenplay and a best original screenplay Academy Award. Amongst
Doubt’s other accolades is the 2005 Tony Award for Best Play.
