Jersey Follows Poppins into Prince Edward???
Date: 23 March 2007
Also in today’s
Daily Mail, the long-talked about Broadway transfer of
Jersey Boys is tipped for the West End’s Prince Edward Theatre for March 2008 (See
The Goss, 28 Jun 2006). According to columnist Baz Bamigboye, theatre owner and impresario Cameron Mackintosh has been wooing the show’s US producers, who had been previously most keen on the Adelphi Theatre (run by Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Really Useful Group), where there were apparently problems with the stage size. To make way for
Jersey Boys, the Prince Edward’s resident since December 2005, the Mackintosh and Disney co-production of
Mary Poppins, would embark on a UK tour next year.
Jersey Boys tells the story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, the blue collar kids from New Jersey who formed a singing group and became famous. The musical – directed by Des McAnuff with a book by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice – features many of the group’s pop hits from the Sixties such as "Big Girls Don't Cry," "Oh What a Night" and "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You". Opened at New York’s August Wilson Theater in November 2005, it won last year’s Tony Award for Best Musical (See
News, 12 Jun 2006). Meanwhile, back at the Adelphi, an announcement is expected imminently about its next production, most likely the reality TV-cast revival of Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s Biblical musical
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (See
The Goss, 28 Feb 2007).
