Duff Stages Double Dose with Saint Joan??? Date: 15 January 2007
It’s been two years since Anne-Marie Duff – now well known for her screen appearances in the likes of Shameless and The Virgin Queen - has been on stage (in Days of Wine and Roses at the Donmar, which was three years after her previous theatre outing in The Daughter in Law at the Young Vic). She makes her return back at the Young Vic next month in artistic director David Lan’s production of Thomas Otway’s Restoration comedy The Soldier's Fortune. But fans won’t have to wait long to see her back on stage again. The Soldier's Fortune finishes on 31 March 2007 and, after that, Duff will just move a short distance along the South Bank to the National Theatre. She’s signed up to take the title role in a new production of Saint Joan, directed by Marianne Elliott (Therese Raquin, Pillars of the Community at the NT). Dates haven’t yet been set, but it’s expected to join the NT rep in the summer. George Bernard Shaw’s 1923 play tells the story of the 19-year-old French girl, made a Catholic saint after being burnt at the stake by the English in Rouen in 1431. Others who’ve famously tackled the role have included Sybil Thorndike (for whom the role was created), Uta Hagen, Joan Plowright and Judi Dench.
