Young & McGregor Count on Monte Cristo???Date: 31 October 2006 Will Young and Ewan McGregor's names are being bandied about in connection with the new musical version The Count of Monte Cristo (See The Goss, 4 Jul 2006). Young, who has found enduring chart success after winning reality TV’s first series of Pop Idol, makes his professional stage acting debut in January in Noel Coward’s The Vortex at the Manchester Royal Exchange (See News, 22 Jun 2006), and has previously been rumoured to take over as Fiyero in Wicked in the West End (See The Goss, 11 Oct 2006). McGregor – best known for his film roles in the likes of Star Wars, Moulin Rouge and Trainspotting - won the Whatsonstage.com Theatregoers’ Choice Award for Best Actor in a Musical for his musical debut last year in Guys and Dolls (See News, 7 Feb 2006). In Alexander Dumas’ 19th-century historical adventure novel, Edmond Dantes is wrongly imprisoned for 14 years before escaping, locating a hidden treasure, assuming the identity of the titular count and destroying his enemies. The Count of Monte Cristo musical will have a book by award-winning playwright Richard Bean, with music and lyrics by Michel Legrand and Don Black.
