Bill Clinton Joins Whatsonstage.com Outing??? Date: 26 September 2006
You never know what extra treats you’ll get on a Whatsonstage.com Outing. Last night’s was a bit of a doozy. Our 200 theatregoers attending A Moon for the Misbegotten at the Old Vic were joined by one very important VIP – Bill Clinton. The former US president is in town this week en route to the Labour Party conference in Manchester. Tonight, he’s the special guest at a gala dinner to mark the launch of a millionaires’ club charity called the Fortune Forum, with guests paying £1,000 a plate for the chance to get near him (oh, and raise money for good causes). Last night, though, Whatsonstage.com theatregoers paid just £25 (for top-price seats, normally £45) for the privilege. And some of them got very near Clinton indeed. A last-minute re-arrangement of seating meant that Clinton was installed in what was originally a Whatsonstage.com seat. When our theatregoer realised why she was being asked to vacate it, she was more than happy to move back a row. Clinton is a friend of Kevin Spacey, who stars in A Moon for the Misbegotten opposite Eve Best and Colm Meaney. Earlier this month, the actor-cum-Old Vic artistic director added an impromptu lot when he compered Clinton's 60th birthday charity auction in Toronto - four tickets to the play, including return flights to London, accommodation and dinner with Spacey after the show. The package went to a mystery bidder for no less than £130,000. The Howard Davies production of Eugene O’Neill’s classic opens to the press tonight with a high-profile gala opening set for tomorrow – though, frankly, it’ll be hard to top the calibre of last night’s audience.
