Berkoff Does Brando in West End Waterfront???Date: 14 September 2006 Steven Berkoff is hoping to bring On the Waterfront, the Oscar-winning 1954 movie directed by Elia Kazan and starred Marlon Brando, to the West End. According to the Independent, playwright and director Berkoff - whose credits include Kafka’s Metamorphosis and Sit and Shiver, which was recently at the New End Theatre in Hampstead - has been in talks with the film’s writer Budd Schulberg about adapting the drama for the stage. In On the Waterfront, an ex-prize fighter turned longshoreman struggles to stand up to his corrupt union bosses. Berkoff reportedly said he does not know who should play the leading role of Terry Malloy, immortalised by Brando, and suggested a nationwide search in the style of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s BBC One casting programme How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?, which announces its winner this Saturday (16 September 2006).
