Movie Musicals Sing in the Polls???Date: 11 September 2006 Singin’ in the Rain has topped a poll of the best movie musicals, in a survey by the US Film Institute. West Side Story came second, with The Wizard of Oz in third position. Others in the top ten included two Julie Andrews films - The Sound of Music in fourth position and Mary Poppins in sixth - and Judy Garland made three appearances (including The Wizard of Oz), with A Star is Born at number seven and Meet Me in St Louis coming tenth. Cabaret, My Fair Lady, An American in Paris, The King and I, Chicago, 42nd Street, All That Jazz, Top Hat, Funny Girl, The Band Wagon, Yankee Doodle Dandy, On the Town, Grease, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Beauty and the Beast, Guys and Dolls, Show Boat and Moulin Rouge made up the top 25. Meanwhile, Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey’s smoochy “The Time of My Life” in the screen version of Dirty Dancing has been voted favourite on-screen dance moment of all time in a British Heart Foundation poll of over 1,000 people. Scenes from The Full Monty, Billy Elliot and Singing in the Rain also featured, alongside less, um, legit dance moments such as Ricky Gervais’ cringe-worthy comedy boogie in The Office. The aim of the BHF poll was to get people up and dancing along to their favourites to promote a healthy lifestyle.
