Madonna to Cast Spells as Witch in Woods???

It's hard to imagine more unlikely casting. According to internet chat monger Popbitch, Madonna is in the running to play the Witch in the forthcoming gala performances of Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods at the Royal Albert Hall (See News, 27 Jun 2006). The world famous pop star made her West End debut - to a critical panning but box office sell-out - in David Williamson's play Up for Grabs in 2002 (See News, 23 May 2002). While she may be a stage musical novice, she did famously play the title role in the 1996 film version of Evita. Sondheim and James Lapine’s 1989 musical is presented at the Royal Albert Hall, in aid of the Children’s Society to celebrate the charity’s 125th anniversary, on Sunday 22 October 2006 at 3.00pm and 7.30pm. Officially confirmed cast members to date include Anita Dobson, Vinnie Jones, Laura Michelle Kelly and Joanna Riding. Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, Little Red Riding Hood, and Rapunzel are joined by a new creation, the tale of the Baker and His Wife, in the musical, which features a different take on the idea of “happily ever after”.
