Smith Plays Dubuque in London in February???

As previously tipped (See The Goss, 3 Jul 2006), the New York Times has reported that Dame Maggie Smith will indeed star in a West End revival of Edward Albee’s The Lady from Dubuque, directed by Anthony Page. Albee’s rarely performed 1980 play is due to begin previews in February 2007, although exact dates and a venue have not yet been confirmed. A spokesperson from producer Robert Fox’s office told Whatsonstage.com that it was “almost completely done and dusted”, but could not yet officially confirm the production details. In the play, a party at which three couples have been playing 20 Questions ends when the hostess, dying of cancer, can no longer bear her pain. Afterwards, a mysterious woman, who may be the mother of the hostess, arrives and raises more difficult questions. Smith was last seen on the West End stage in the 2002 world premiere of David Hare’s The Breath of Life alongside Dame Judi Dench. In 1997, Smith appeared at the same address in another Albee revival, A Delicate Balance, also directed by Anthony Page. Perhaps Page is hoping to continue the Albee/Smith/Haymarket tradition by opening The Lady from Dubuque at the venue following Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, which is currently booking at the Haymarket until 25 November 2006.
