Beaton Piggybacks Young’s Royal Farce???
Date: 1 August 2006
Spectator drama critics
Toby Young and
Lloyd Evans have faced their own critical onslaught today for
A Right Royal Farce, their new comedy about the royal family, which opened last night at the King’s Head Theatre (See Today’s
Review Round-up). But will their experience put off
Alistair Beaton? Beaton, who had a West End hit with his New Labour satire
Feelgood in 2001, is working on his own comedy about the royals. Entitled
King of Hearts, it’s due to be staged at Hampstead Theatre early in the new year, care of Out of Joint, the same company behind
Feelgood. This isn’t the first time that Beaton, Young and Evans have seemingly dipped their pens in the same well of inspiration. Last year, Young and Evans’ Whatsonstage.com Award-winning
Who's the Daddy? covered the same David Blunkett scandal ground as Beaton’s Channel 4 TV serial
A Very Social Secretary. On that occasion, too, Young and Evans got there first. But, as the critics can testify, first isn’t necessarily best.
