Cattrall Rides Streetcar at Rose of Kingston???

Kim Cattrall may be treading the boards in the UK again. The Sex and the City star made her West End debut last year – lying flat on her back as a paraplegic fighting to have her life support withdrawn – in an updated version of Brian Clark’s 1978 play Whose Life Is It Anyway? (See News, 23 Jul 2004). According to the Sunday Times, she’s keen to reunite with Whose Life’s director Sir Peter Hall for a new production of Tennessee Williams’ 1947 classic A Streetcar Named Desire. Cattrall would play faded Southern belle Blanche Dubois, the part immortalised in the 1951 screen version by Vivien Leigh and last played on the London stage in Trevor Nunn’s NT production by Glenn Close. No word, though, on who would star opposite her as Stanley Kowalski, forever associated with Marlon Brando following his scorching stage and screen turns in the role. In any case, Sex and the City fans will have a hike from the West End to catch Cattrall this time. Hall hopes to present the play at the Surrey-based Rose of Kingston (See News, 10 Jun 2005), a new £11 million theatre modelled on the Elizabethan Rose where the director has been working to establish a permanent 20-strong company, presenting a repertory of eight plays, running annually from September to June and complementing a programme of education work alongside Kingston University’s two-year Master of Fine Arts post-graduate course.
