National Still on Course for Sunday Opening???Date: 15 June 2006As previously reported (See The Goss, 7 Dec 2005), Sunday shows at the National Theatre are on the cards. It’s been widely reported that the South Bank venue’s artistic director Nicholas Hytner is in advanced talks with the unions about negotiating working hours and pay for staff, should the theatre complex stay open seven days per week. Some West End productions, including The Lion King and Stomp, schedule Sunday matinees, and many cabarets, galas and one-off shows take place on Sundays. But due to the prohibitive costs of paying staff for double time on what has traditionally been their one guaranteed day off, many commercial venues steer clear – let alone subsidised houses. A spokesperson for the National told Whatsonstage.com that Sunday opening is something the venue is keen to launch and plans are still in progress. Related Content |
