Older Is Better for Godspell Veterans???Date: 26 May 2006We’ve had a lovely email from stage stalwart Gay Soper, who’s been winning critical acclaim for her supporting role in the Menier Chocolate Factory’s revival of Sondheim’s Sunday in the Park with George, which transferred to the West End’s Wyndham’s Theatre this week. Soper points out that, with her at Wyndham’s, Jeremy Irons in Embers at the Duke of York’s and, from next week, David Essex taking over as the dance-hating minister in Footloose at the Novello (See News, 12 May 2006), three of the original cast of Godspell are back in the West End at the same time – more than 30 years after the Biblical musical first opened at the Roundhouse and then transferred to Wyndham’s. Stephen Schwarz, who wrote the music for Godspell, will also soon be represented in the West End when Wicked opens at the Apollo Victoria in September. “This all proves that even today's society is not just for the young!” exclaims Soper, before signing off that she’s “having a ball”. Long may she continue to. Related Content |
