Gone with the Wind Competes for Drury Lane???

If rumours prove true, The Producers may be vacating the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in the New Year, leaving the way open for a number of big-budget shows jockeying for a berth at the coveted 2,200-seat venue. The stage adaptation of The Lord of the Rings - which has lost its slot at the Dominion Theatre where Queen’s We Will Rock You is hanging on (See News, 2 May 2006) - has already been mooted. Another possibility for Drury Lane is a new musical adaptation of Gone with the Wind, directed by Trevor Nunn, which was tipped back at the end of 2004 (See The Goss, 9 Dec 2004). Harold Rome and Horton Foote’s previous musical version of Gone with the Wind had a West End run at the West End’s Theatre Royal Drury Lane in 1972. This version of Margaret Mitchell’s literary classic about the American Civil War has a book by Mary Martin, and was workshopped in back in November 2004. According to the Daily Mail, yet another contender for Drury Lane is The Drowsy Chaperone, which opened earlier this month at Broadway’s Marquis Theatre. The parody of 1920s romantic musicals started life eight years ago as a sketch for a stag do in Toronto. It has music lyrics by Lisa Lambert and Greg Morrison and a book by Bob Martin and Don McKellar.
