Friedman Sisters Flying High in New York???
Date: 5 May 2006
The Brits in general are taking New York by storm this season (See
The Goss, 2 May 2006). But, more specifically, this week it’s British sisters Maria and Sonia Friedman who are flying high, having enjoyed back-to-back openings. On Wednesday, diva
Maria Friedman opened her cabaret show at the prestigious Cafe Carlyle, where
Stephen Sondheim, who had written Maria two new songs for the show, was in attendance. Last night, producer
Sonia Friedman opened Jonathan Kent’s
Ralph Fiennes-led production of
Faith Healer at the Booth Theatre, where it’s broken box office records and is currently sold out until mid-June. Both shows received glowing reviews in today’s
New York Times. It’s certainly a nice change from the sisters’ last New York outing with
The Woman in White, which closed after poor reviews and the poor health of star Maria, who was diagnosed with breast cancer just days before the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical’s opening night last November (See
News, 17 Nov 2005).
