Dee Has Ayckbourn in Mind Post-Mabel???
Date: 25 April 2006
Following her current West End turn in Jerry Herman musical
Mack and Mabel,
Janie Dee plans to return to the realm of straight plays, and more particularly
Alan Ayckbourn. Dee has arguably the biggest hit of her career with her 1999 performance as an android in Ayckbourn’s
Comic Potential, which earned her Best Actress trophies at the Evening Standard, Critics’ Circle and Laurence Olivier Awards. The production, which Ayckbourn also directed, opened first at the Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough, where Acykbourn is artistic director. Late this summer, Dee hopes to return to Scarborough to star in a revival of Ayckbourn’s
A Woman in Mind. The 1985 black comedy revolves around forty-something Susan, who is starved of affection by her vicar husband and distant son. After an accident with a rake, Susan is confronted with not just her real family but also an imaginary one that’s far more devoted. Ayckbourn suffered a stroke earlier this year (See
