Dirty Dancing Challenges Wicked Record???
Date: 12 April 2006
Evita,
Spamalot and
Wicked watch out – there’s yet-another musical contending to be king of the record-breaking hill in the West End this year and it’s from Down Under. Producers of
Dirty Dancing, the stage version of the seminal Eighties flick (See
News, 28 Feb 2006), have announced today that they have become the fastest-selling production in West End history by shifting more than £3 million worth of tickets just six weeks after going on sale. Such box office boasting isn’t uncommon – and, as often as not, it’s down to how these things are measured. The producers of
Wicked made a similar “fastest-selling” claim last month when it sold a £100,000 worth of tickets within its first hour (See
The Goss, 8 Mar 2006). Nevertheless, today’s news is no mean feat at all for the much more modestly budgeted
Dirty Dancing. And it means that, with still more than six months to go before it receives its UK premiere on 24 October 2006, the screen-to-stager has already sold out of the first two months of its run at the West End’s Aldwych Theatre. Obviously, nobody’s keeping this baby in the corner.
