Actors & Unions Put Out By Cigarette Ban???Date: 30 March 2006Smoking on television screens has been banned in Scotland, a move which could mean long-running characters in programmes such as Rebus will have to give up their favourite (though admittedly unhealthy) pastime for future series, and Winston Churchill can no longer be portrayed with his cigar. The law, which came into effect in Scotland on Monday (27 March 2006), follows curbs introduced in Ireland in 2004 and is expected to affect production companies in England by 2007. Similar rules are expected to be applied to stage work as well. Period dramas, notably from the 1920s to the 1960s when smoking was the social norm, will be most heavily affected by the clamp down. Equity and SOLT, as well as actors including Joanna Lumley are lobbying against the “daft” ban. What on earth would Noel Coward say? Related Content |
