Fans Go Nuts for Spamalot World Record???Date: 24 March 2006 In the crazy world of Monty Python, nothing seems impossible. And the team behind the Tony Award-winning Spamalot, which receives its UK premiere at the West End’s Palace Theatre in October (See News, 20 Jan 2006), celebrated their first anniversary on Broadway this week by setting the Guinness World Record for the “World’s Largest Coconut Orchestra”. Over 1,700 people gathered in Shubert Alley to join in a special rendition of “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life”, one of the songs featured in the show, led by cast members including Tony nominees Christopher Sieber and Michael McGrath. Coconuts are used as percussion instruments in the production, as well as for making sound effects such as horses’ hooves. The new musical, "lovingly ripped off" from the film Monty Python and the Holy Grail, opened on 17 March 2005 to critical and popular acclaim at the Schubert Theater, and soon became one of Broadway’s hot tickets. Directed by Mike Nichols, Spamalot has a book and lyrics by original Python Eric Idle, with music by John Du Prez and Idle.
