Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon Makes Stage Leap???
Date: 13 March 2006
A stage musical version of the gravity-defying martial arts movie, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, is in the pipeline. According to media reports, showbiz brothers Bob and Harvey Weinstein (former owners of film production company Miramax and co-producers of Mel Brooks’ The Producers) aim to bring the 2000 Ang Lee film to the stage. In Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon - which won four Oscars and a BAFTA - when Li’s magical jade sword is stolen, he embarks on an incredible journey to recover it and unmask the thief, while also pursuing his unrequited love, Yu. The Weinsteins have the options to four more books in the Crouching Tiger series, which may also be woven into an epic new version for the stage. In an article in the Independent this weekend, the brothers described their vision as “an opportunity to create something revolutionary”. The project has been compared with The Lion King meets Cirque du Soleil, with Broadway hits and acrobatics featuring in the spectacle.
