More London Anger But No Tennant & Reilly???

Date: 3 March 2006

This summer’s upcoming Peter Hall Company revival of Look Back in Anger isn’t the first time Theatre Royal Bath has produced the John Osborne’s 20th-century classic with a view to celebrating its 50th anniversary this year (See Today’s News). Last January, Bath joined up with Edinburgh’s Royal Lyceum to mount an award-winning production, directed by Richard Baron and starring David Tennant as “angry young man” Jimmy Porter opposite Kelly Reilly as his middle class-born wife Alison (See News, 22 Nov 2004). The hope was to revive that revival this year in the capital to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the play’s Royal Court premiere in May 1956 (See The Goss, 6 Jun 2005) – a prospect that had London theatregoers salivating. Unfortunately, it looks like Tennant’s shooting commitments as the new Doctor Who, as well as Reilly’s own burgeoning film career, have caused availability problems. Nevertheless, all going to plan, Bath does hope Look Back in Anger in London with its new production later in the year. Although no casting has yet been announced, the Hall coffering does already boast an impressive pedigree with Royal Court alumnus Peter Gill directing and William Dudley designing.
