Women Beware Women, RSC Beware Wilton??? Date: 24 February 2006
Penelope Wilton's triumphant return to the Royal Shakespeare Company stage was delayed at last night's press night of Women Beware Women after a fire alert sent actors out into a chill February night while the cast fretted in adjacent offices. Happily, the delay was brief and the rest of the evening proceeded without further problems. Superstitious members of the company, however, might be nervously wondering if the award-winning actress is jinxed. The last time Wilton trod the boards for the RSC, as Arkadina in the 2000 production of The Seagull, also in the Swan, the performance was interrupted when part of the set was accidently set alight. The fire happened about 45 minutes into the evening when one of the actors dragged a linen sheet over a live candle flame - causing both the sheet and part of the stage scenery to go up in flames. Fortunately, backstage staff were able to promptly extinguish the fire and no further damage was caused. The performance continued after just ten minutes - no evacuation of the theatre was necessary on that occasion.
