Guantanamo Causes Stir in Commons???

Political drama is being staged at the heart of British politics on Thursday (9 February 2006) when the House of Commons will provide the venue for a political meeting at which there will be a reading of the recent West End play Guantanamo. The study of the plight of Guantanamo Bay prisoners will be performed as part of a discussion involving families of Guantanamo Bay detainees. The meeting is organised by the human rights charity Reprieve in conjunction with the Tricycle Theatre in order to draw attention to the number of British residents still held in Guantanamo Bay, as the hunger strike reaches a new and more dangerous phase. Families of Guantanamo Bay detainees will be present at the meeting and will take part in a discussion alongside former prisoner Moazzam Begg, legal director of Reprieve Clive Stafford Smith and Tricycle artistic director Nicholas Kent, who directed Guantanamo when it premiered in May 2004. The script is entirely based on personal testimonies from the families of the prisoners as well as statements from lawyers, government spokesmen, medical experts and other commentators. Set in Camp Delta, the piece focuses on Britons and British residents, some of whom have been detained by the US government without charge, trial or no effective access to law since 2001.
