De Jongh Knocks Mackintosh Down the Aisle???Date: 1 February 2006The Evening Standard’s acerbic critic Nicholas de Jongh – who famously earned the Critics’ Circle Awards coverage on popbitch.com after a censorship clash with Michael Portillo two years ago (See News, 3 Feb 2004) – risked controversy again this year when he laid into Cameron Mackintosh. The impresario has spent more than £35 million refurbishing his various West End theatres, including the Prince of Wales, which hosted yesterday’s ceremony (See News, 31 Jan 2006). Not good enough. Why? Because of the abolition of the central aisle in theatre seating that Mackintosh seems to favour. “We lose our central aisles at our peril,” fumed de Jongh before urging others to “protest and protest loudly at Cameron Mackintosh”.
