Mendes Makes Stage Comeback Promise???

With his latest film, Jarhead, about to be released in the UK this week, director Sam Mendes is reportedly looking forward to a return to his theatrical roots. In various interviews, the former Donmar Warehouse artistic director has confirmed that he would like to direct for the stage very soon, possibly in 2006/7, possibly some Shakespeare, possibly in a double bill with another classic, as he did with his multi award-winning pairing of Twelfth Night and Uncle Vanya for his Donmar farewell in 2002. Whatever he does – and whenever he does - it will be for his own Neal Street Productions, and it will very much depend on timing and what he can fit in around other work commitments for both himself and his film star wife Kate Winslet. A spokesperson for Neal Street told Whatsonstage.com that, when Mendes does return, the production(s) will most likely originate in New York before a possible London transfer. Mendes’ last stage outing was the 2002 Broadway revival of Gypsy, starring Bernadette Peters.
