Stoppard Rocks into Royal Row & Transfer???Date: 5 January 2006The controversy surrounding Tom Stoppard and the Royal Court’s 50th anniversary celebrations doesn’t seem to have harmed his new play’s future prospects. West End producer Sonia Friedman has already nabbed the transfer rights for Rock 'n' Roll, which has its premiere season from 3 June to 15 July 2006 at the Royal Court Downstairs. Specially written for the theatre, the play spans the recent history of Czechoslovakia between the Prague Spring and the Velvet Revolution - but from the double perspective of Prague, where a rock 'n' roll band came to symbolise resistance to the regime, and the British left, represented by a Communist philosopher at Cambridge. Rufus Sewell is tipped to star in the production, directed by fellow Court first-timer Trevor Nunn. We assume former Royal Court artistic director William Gaskill, who has pulled out of the theatre’s anniversary programme in protest over Stoppard’s inclusion (See Today’s News), won’t be attending the opening night party.
