Crawford Celebrates Phantom’s Broadway Record???Date: 4 January 2006 London’s original masked man, Michael Crawford, will cross the pond this month to attend the 7,486th performance of the New York production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera when it celebrates becoming the longest-running show on Broadway. The musical reaches the milestone on 9 January 2006 when it surpasses the previous record-holder, another Lloyd Webber classic, Cats. Crawford will join Lloyd Webber, producer Cameron Mackintosh and director Harold Prince, along with other special guests, at the Majestic Theater to mark the occasion. Meanwhile, the London production, which currently stars Earl Carpenter in the title role, celebrated 8,000 performances in the West End last night (3 January 2006). Phantom, which is now in its 20th year in London, has won more than 50 major theatre awards including seven Tonys on Broadway and three Oliviers in the West End.
