Spamalot Set for West End Opening???Date: 3 January 2006 Not to be outdone by Evita, the producers of Spamalot are also expected to make an official announcement within the coming weeks – or even days (See The Goss, 27 Sep 2005). Publicists have already been appointed for the West End transfer of the Monty Python musical, which is now expected to open in August/September, within weeks of another Broadway hit, Wicked (See News, 16 Dec 2005). Talk about a head-to-head! Spamalot is expected to open in a Really Useful Theatre, most probably either the London Palladium or the Palace. Based on the 1975 cult film, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Spamalot has a book and lyrics by original Python Eric Idle, who has also co-written the music with John Du Prez. Still a smash in New York, where British thesp Simon Russell Beale is currently starring as King Arthur, Spamalot set a Broadway record by hiking its regular top ticket price to $110. Ouch! Let’s hope the West End production doesn’t emulate that pricing strategy.
