Evita Announcement Imminent???
Date: 3 January 2006
Heads up to
Evita fans. You shouldn’t have too much longer to wait for official news about the upcoming West End revival of
Andrew Lloyd Webber and
Tim Rice’s 1979 musical (See
The Goss, 26 Aug 2005). Venue, dates and – we hear – some exciting casting is scheduled to be announced within the next month. It’s likely that the new production, directed by Donmar Warehouse artistic director
Michael Grandage, will open in June at the Adelphi Theatre, whose current resident
Chicago would transfer to another West End home in order to make way (See
Features, 3 Jan 2006).
Philip Quast is widely tipped to play General Juan Peron, but the field of contenders for the lead of Eva Peron, the Argentine actress who charmed and scratched her way up to share the power and the bed of her country's leader, still looks wide open. Amongst the names previous bandied about for the part have been
Denise Van Outen,
Jenna Russell and, last but not least,
Madonna, who starred in Alan Parker’s 1996 screen version.
