Congrats to Sher & Doran! Who’s Next???Date: 22 December 2005 Actor Antony Sher and director Gregory Doran were amongst those making history yesterday on the first day of the UK’s new legislation permitting civil partnerships between gay and lesbian couples. The couple met while working at the Royal Shakespeare Company, where Sher continues to perform regularly and Doran is an associate director. After more than 18 years together, the couple tied the knot at a ceremony held at Islington Town Hall in north London, during which Sher read a speech from Cyrano de Bergerac and Doran read a Shakespeare sonnet. Commenting on the momentous occasion, Sher said: “It’s wonderful, it’s a little bit of history being made. Not just for the gay movement but for the human rights movement. I feel very proud this is happening in this country and that we can be part of the very first group to have it done.” Congratulations to the happy couple! Who will be the next thespians to walk down the aisle under the new law?
