West End Wicked Set for September 2006???
Date: 14 December 2005

It’s looking increasingly likely that the predicted Broadway double whammy at the Apollo Victoria will come to pass in 2006 (See The Goss 1, 15 Nov 2005). The Billy Joel-Twyla Tharp dance musical Movin' Out has already announced its limited UK premiere season, running from 18 April to 17 July 2006 (previews from 28 March) at the West End theatre ahead of a continental tour (See News, 7 Dec 2005). Now, US industry bible Variety has reported that, subject to confirmation, producers of Wicked do indeed hope to follow that show with theirs, opening in late September 2006 (See The Goss 2, 15 Nov 2005). Based on Gregory Maguire’s novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, the musical fantasy rewinds from The Wizard of Oz to tell the back story of the warring witches. The stage production opened in October 2003 at New York’s George Gershwin Theater, where it’s still running. It has a score by Stephen Schwartz (Pippin, Godspell) and book by Winnie Holtzman and is directed by Joe Mantello who would recreate his production in the West End. Mantello has previously directed Richard Greenberg’s play Take Me Out at the Donmar Warehouse before its New York transfer.
