Another Solution to Smoking Concerns???
Date: 9 December 2005
Speaking of the Royal Court, while other London theatres, bars and restaurants have banned smoking, the Sloane Square landmark is investing in trying to keep everyone happy – smokers and non-smokers, that is. It has installed four air cleaners in its bar and restaurant. Manager Jason Capper explains the units “operate continuously at lunchtimes and throughout the evening, removing airborne pollutants including dust, tobacco smoke, allergens and viruses, leaving a healthier environment for everyone. In addition, we have defined non-smoking areas to ensure non-smokers can sit away from smokers’ tables, if they wish.” Perhaps the theatre will need to install the Honeywell units on the stage at some point in the not-too-distant future too. Some anti-smoking campaigners have lobbied to have even on-stage smoking banned. Maybe it’d be easier to get playwrights to only write about non-smokers – but then what on earth would you do when reviving plays, Noel Coward for instance?
