Harwood Premieres English Tragedy???

First-time theatre producer Eric Abraham clearly has caught the bug. It’s still three months before his first stage production opens – Christopher Hampton’s new stage adaptation of the Sandor Marai novel Embers, which is luring Jeremy Irons back to the London stage after a 17-year absence (See News, 7 Oct 2005) – but he’s already planning future projects. His next will be the premiere of the latest from Ronald Harwood, whose best known stage play, 1980’s The Dresser, was revived by Peter Hall in the West End earlier this year. The new play, entitled An English Tragedy, will be directed by Michael Blakemore, who’s also directing Embers. Abraham has also secured the rights for a new play by another veteran playwright, Hugh Whitemore, which he plans to produce further down the line. Whitemore’s plays include Breaking the Code, Stevie, Pack of Lies, The Best of Friends, Disposing of the Body, A Letter of Resignation and God Only Knows. He has also translated the new version of Pirandello’s As You Desire Me, currently starring Kristin Scott Thomas at the West End’s Playhouse Theatre.
