Guys Recoups… & Hopes for More Luck???Date: 21 October 2005 Michael Grandage’s revival of Frank Loesser’s Broadway classic Guys and Dolls - the Donmar Warehouse’s first musical to originate outside its own 250-seat venue - has been seriously rocking the boat at the West End’s Piccadilly Theatre, where it’s set a new record, recouping its £3 million capitalisation in just 17 weeks. The previous – and very recently set - record was held by Mel Brooks’ multi award-winning hit The Producers, which recouped its £5.5 million capitalisation less than a year after opening (See The Goss, 21 Jul 2005). Guys and Dolls, which opened on 1 June 2005, has enjoyed capacity audiences – no doubt due in large part to the casting of Scottish screen star Ewan McGregor as gambler Sky Masterson. The next trick will be to see whether lady luck stays with the show once McGregor’s contract ends in December, when Nigel Harman takes over as Sky. Fellow principals Jane Krakowski and Douglas Hodge, who play lovers Miss Adelaide and Nathan Detroit, also leave in December and will be replaced by Sarah Lancashire and Nigel Lindsay.
