ATG Juggles Musical Production Options???Date: 13 October 2005 In producing terms, the Ambassador Theatre Group (ATG) is best known for plays, including many Sonia Friedman productions, which have found homes in many of the numerous West End playhouses that ATG owns. However, yesterday’s purchase of the 1,200-seat Savoy Theatre signals the company’s intention to venture much more into bigger-budget musicals (See News, 12 Oct 2005). Speaking to Whatsonstage.com, ATG executive director Rosemary Squire confirmed that “we are looking to diversify from play production.” Their experience with Guys and Dolls at the 1,200-seat Piccadilly, which is also part of the ATG group, has, she said, been “so positive” that they wanted another similar size venue they can “produce musicals in”. The Savoy is currently home to The Rat Pack which, Squire suspects, “won’t last forever though I hope it will continue for awhile … I wish it every success”. Beyond its run, however, ATG is already planning a number of musical projects for 2006 and beyond. These include a “variety of homegrown musicals” as well as transfers of Broadway hits, for which they’re already in discussions with New York producers.
