Show Boat Sails into Royal Albert Hall???Date: 27 September 2005Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein’s Broadway classic Show Boat is due to receive a concert production at the Royal Albert Hall, directed by Francesca Zambello, in spring 2006. The groundbreaking 1927 musical, based on the novel by Edna Ferber, follows the lives and loves of a song and dance troupe, and deals with issues of racism and miscegenation, which were highly controversial at the time. No details have yet been confirmed for the production, but according to the Daily Mail, a large company with two choruses will be joined by 65 musicians from the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Show Boat was last seen in the West End in 1998 when Hal Prince’s Tony Award-winning Broadway revival transferred for a short season at the Prince Edward Theatre (See News, 6 Jul 1998).
