Kidman Returns for Hedda Gabler???

Date: 20 September 2005

Hollywood screen star Nicole Kidman, who made her London stage debut in 1998 with The Blue Room at the Donmar Warehouse, is rumoured to be returning to the West End next year with a new production of Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler. Australian red-head Kidman is one of Hollywood’s top leading ladies, with more than 40 film credits to her name including Moulin Rouge, The Hours, The Others, Bewitched, The Interpreter, Birth and The Stepford Wives. Her previous London appearance at the Donmar Warehouse received raves, including famously from the Daily Telegraph’s Charles Spencer who described Kidman “pure theatrical Viagra.” Should it come to pass, the new production of Hedda Gabler would come hot on the heels of Richard Eyre’s Eve Best-led Almeida staging which transferred to the West End this summer, as the drama about a tragically unhappy housewife is reportedly looking for a spring/summer 2006 opening. Daniel Kramer is tipped to direct. Kramer’s other London credits include Hair, which opens at the Gate Theatre this week, and Through the Leaves, which transferred to the West End starring his real-life partner, Simon Callow.
