Hollywood Execs Should See More Plays???Date: 8 September 2005If Kevin Spacey’s career has suffered in film terms since taking over the helm at the Old Vic, he isn’t bothered. At today’s press conference to outline the plans for his second season as the theatre’s artistic director (See Today’s News), Spacey said he thought he’d achieved what he considered a “good balance” between screen and stage this year in doing six weeks on one film (Superman Returns) and 36 weeks on three plays (one which he directed, two in which he starred). That said, and while no contracts have yet been signed, Spacey says he’s likely to spend some time away from London between his performances in Richard II and Moon for the Misbegotten next year. However, his “primary allegiance” remains the Old Vic. Do some of his Hollywood peers think he’s crazy for devoting so much time and energy to a London theatre? Spacey shrugged his shoulders: “It’s okay if I go off ‘radar’ in respect to film because I’m doing what I want to do.” And if any studio bosses don’t understand why he and other film actors want to act on stage, Spacey advised, “they really ought to come and see a play, then they’ll get it.” Related Content |
