More names to add to the mix of casting possibilities for the 2006 West End revival of
Evita (See
The Goss, 16 Aug 2005). The
Daily Mail reports that, over the coming weeks, several top contenders will be having private auditions with composer
Andrew Lloyd Webber, whose Really Useful Group is also producing the musical. They include Idina Menzel, star of Broadway’s
Rent and
Wicked, who’s vying for the title part of Eva Peron, the Argentine actress who charmed and scratched her way up to share the power and the bed of her country's leader General Juan Peron. Other names bandied about for the part have included
Denise Van Outen,
Jenna Russell and, last but not least,
Madonna, who starred in Alan Parker’s 1996 screen version. Amongst the possibles Juans due to meet with Lloyd Webber are triple Olivier Award winner
Philip Quast,
Roger Allam (whose musical credits include
City of Angels and the original cast of
Les Miserables),
Ciaran Hinds (who played the theatre manager in the screen version of
The Phantom of the Opera) and
Douglas Hodge. Hodge is currently co-starring with
Ewan McGregor in
Guys and Dolls, directed by
Michael Grandage, who will also be directing
Evita. The production is designed
Christopher Oram and choreographed by
Rob Ashford – the same creative team behind
Guys and Dolls. It’s expected to open in June 2006.
