Edinburgh Hits Open Trafalgar’s Studio 2????Date: 23 August 2005 When the Ambassador Theatre Group launched the West End’s Trafalgar Studios last summer (See News, 7 Apr 2004), the clue was in the plural title: there were meant to be two studios carved out of the then 650-seat Whitehall Theatre. The larger, 400-seat auditorium has been happily housing productions – including the RSC’s Othello and the musicals Sweeney Todd and Simply Heavenly - since last June. But what became of the 100-seater? At the time of the press launch, the smaller space, which was to be dedicated to new work, was said to be on target for a September/October opening. Well, it now looks like it will indeed open in October - albeit a year later. No word yet on programming, but given the post-Edinburgh timing, we suspect that it’s likely to be full of festival transfers. Last year, ATG put together a month-long Edinburgh Exported season – featuring four plays as well as a late night schedule of comedy and cabaret, with all seats at the Fringe-friendly price of just £15 - at the West End’s New Ambassadors Theatre. It’s nice to know that those of us London-bound theatregoers will have a proper chance to see the best of the fest.
