Queen Breaks Record with We Will Rock You???
Date: 15 August 2005
Meanwhile, another West End musical is also marking a milestone this week. Queen musical
We Will Rock You is now officially the longest-running show in the history of the Dominion Theatre, having completed 39 months and more than 1,230 performances there since opening in May 2002. To celebrate, a special performance will take place this Wednesday 17 August 2005 in the presence of show creators
Ben Elton and Queen’s
Brian May and
Roger Taylor. The musical displaces previous record-holder
Grease, which notched up around 1,200 performances between 1993 and 1996, and far outruns other box office hits
Beauty and the Beast (which played for two years and seven months) and Dave Clark's
Time (two years). The Dominion milestone follows the announcement that Queen has overtaken the Beatles to become UK Album Chart champion, having now spent more weeks on the chart than the Fab Four. Following its Whatsonstage.com Award-winning success in London – despite a critical drubbing -
We Will Rock You has mounted productions in Spain, Australia, Germany, Japan and Las Vegas, with further productions planned for South Africa, Switzerland and Italy in 2006. Globally, it’s already been seen by more than four million people. In London, where the Dominion box office has sold over 2.1 million tickets to date, the show is currently booking until 29 April 2006.
