RSC Books Stand-ups for Stratford Laughs???Date: 12 August 2005Stratford-upon-Avon may not normally be considered a key stop on the stand-up circuit, but next month you will nonetheless be able to catch many top comedians there. To celebrate with the season of the bard’s Comedies - A Midsummer Night's Dream, Twelfth Night, The Comedy of Errors and As You Like It in the Royal Shakespeare Theatre - the RSC is hosting a special programme of late night stand-up and talks about the nature of comedy from 21 to 24 September 2005. The line-up features comedians Ken Dodd, Mark Watson, Alex Horne, John Oliver, Andy Zalman, Jake Broder and the Mitchell Brothers. There will also be a discussion with the creators of popular adult comic book Viz about Shakespeare’s “lower orders and chavs” to coincide with the cartoonists’ display of sketches of backstage staff, which adorn the sets of A Midsummer Night's Dream and Twelfth Night (See The Goss, 17 Jun 2005). Organiser Fiona Lindsay says, “The aim of these events is to find resonances of Shakespeare’s own approach to the business of being funny in contemporary works and in unexpected places.” Related Content |
