Blunkett – The Musical Called Off???
Date: 15 July 2005
A musical inspired by the sex life of disgraced former Home Secretary David Blunkett was tipped to become a West End hit after a scheduled run at the 2005 Edinburgh Fringe (See
The Goss, 28 Jan 2005). But
Blunkett - The Musical, written by journalist Ginny Dougary, now looks unlikely to happen at all. It’s been pulled from the festival programme and, in London, has already been scooped by
Who's the Daddy?, a farce about Blunkett’s affair with
Spectator publisher Kimberly Quinn, which is currently in previews at Islington’s King’s Head Theatre ahead of a press night on Monday (See
News, 27 Jun 2005). The play is written by the
Spectator’s own theatre critics
Toby Young and Lloyd Evans, with additional writing by Jeremy Lloyd. It’s directed by
Tamara Harvey and produced by
Nica Burns and
Ian Osborne. Its limited King’s Head season continues until 28 August 2005 but, depending on the critical reception, perhaps it’ll be the Blunkett bonkbuster that actually does make it to the West End.
